Meyer-Wiegand was raised in an artistic family, his father being a conductor and pianist, his mother a concert vocalist. He started painting at an early age in the tradition of the Düsseldorf school of painting. Later he became inspired by the French Impressionists Degas and Vuillard and began painting figures and, eventually, portraits. His oeuvre spans varied themes, from vistas of landscapes, rivers and harbours to park scenes, popular festivals and animated townscapes, all rendered in loose brushwork. Meyer-Wiegand worked in Cologne and Düsseldorf and went on numerous study trips, staying in Holland around 1935, in Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Spain and the United States.
