Amsterdammer Sal Meijer is considered to be one of the greatest naive painters in the Netherlands. He was a diamond polisher by trade and kept painting for the evening and free hours. After 1914 he made painting his profession. He painted Amsterdam cityscapes, animals, still lifes and landscapes in a technique that he used throughout his life. In order to approach reality as closely as possible, he applied the paint in tiny dots on the canvas, sometimes in several thin layers, mixing the pigment with varnish. He rarely painted people. In 1930 the painter moved to Blaricum.
