Simon Maris

Windmill 't Haantje along the Smal Weesp in Weesp
oil on panel 45.0 x 54.2 cm, signed l.r.

This painting was previously for sale.

Simon Maris's work is distinguished from that of his father, Willem Maris, by a light, colourful palette that can be attributed to his training at the art academy in Antwerp and subsequent travels in France and Italy. His main subjects were figures and portraits, and after 1908 his wife Cornelia den Breejen and children Mies and Thijs often sat for him. The family usually summered in Zandvoort, where the artist painted many pictures of them and of the fashionable beach life. Maris was one of the leading lights of the Amsterdam art scene. In the period shortly after 1900, he and Mondrian and Arnold Gorter would paint and sketch together along the river Gein.
