Ton Meijer grew up in Enschede and from 1909 he trained as a decorative painter in Amsterdam at the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid (1909-1913). After that he chose free painting. From 1920 to 1924 he lived in Limburg, where nature and the quiet villages around Maastricht were the main source of inspiration for his impressionism. He then moved to Amsterdam. He alternated his stay in the capital with long journeys through France and Spain, where his work was influenced by the southern light and the line of the landscape. In 1940 Meijer moved into Sarphatipark 42 house, which he shared with Else Berg and Mommie Schwarz, with whom he became good friends. They left several works with Ton Meijer just before their deportation to Auschwitz.
