Painter and graphic artist Wilhelm Wagner initially trained as a goldsmith, but eventually chose to become a visual artist. After studies in Hanau, Barmen and Berlin, he worked in Paris and Copenhagen. In the years 1917-22 Wagner also lived in the Netherlands, including Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. After this he settled in Bad Saarow (Germany) where he would live most of his life. Wagner painted cityscapes, landscapes, flower still lifes, initially in an expressionist, later more impressionistic style. There are also early, expressionist female nudes and portraits by him, in a style related to that of Egon Schiele.
