Willem Knip is one of the great painters of the Laren school. He was trained as a decorative painter at the Quellinius School in Amsterdam and worked for some time in Chris Lebeau's studio. To break free from decorative influences, he settled in the Gooi around 1900. There he developed a balanced impressionist style. After traveling to Paris, later to Italy and Spain, his colour became airy and light. Popular subjects were landscapes, harbour and cityscapes. Work by this painter is in the possession of Singer Laren, among others.
