In the choice of his subjects, Willem de Zwart belonged to the Hague School, in his style and use of color to the Amsterdam Impressionists. He is therefore also called the 'Haagse Breitner'. He painted his landscapes, figure pieces and still lifes with a smooth, daring brushstroke. He applied the paint thickly, sometimes straight from the tube, occasionally with bright hues of color in daring reds, yellows and blues, giving his paintings a special liveliness. This view of waiting carriages is a sober, wintery performance. It is a gray rainy day, the carriage and coachmen are reflected by the wet road surface. From about 1890 to 1894, De Zwart paints representations of the Hague rental carriages standing by, a subject that is also reflected in his watercolors from this period.
