Willem Korteling was born to a well-established family of painters in Deventer and took his first drawing lessons from his father, Bartus Korteling. Having judged his son sufficiently talented, Willem was given permission to make painting his profession. The garden behind his parents’ home provided his first inspiration for myriad studies of flowers, chickens and other small animals; later he added landscapes, small livestock, birds and still lifes, rendering them in a manner both subtle and sumptuous. Korteling continued to paint in and around Deventer his entire life.
