Willem Maris felt most comfortable at home in his studio. When he moved to Rijswijk, he even had a duck pond built in the garden to capture the ducks and their offspring close to home. Nevertheless, he and his good friend Anton Mauve, who preferred to paint outside in all weathers, regularly went outside on a nice day, where he painted watery landscapes with ducks or cows near a ditch. It must have been such a day on which he made this atmospheric painting.
