Willy Sluiter had two distinct talents: he painted splendid, impressionist landscapes as well as harbour and city views. He could draw rapidly, able to capture life in swift, often funny, sketches and watercolours. Sluiter made numerous drawings of his friends and family, the sophisticated beach life in Scheveningen, and the wealthy snow tourists in Switzerland, with which he shows himself to be a chronicler of his times. His talent for drawing led to many commissions for book covers, illustrations, posters and other forms of advertising. From the nineteen twenties on he was a well-known and highly successful artist.
