The painter, sculptor and assembly artist Wim de Haan is, along with Jaap Wagemaker and Bram Bogart, one of the most important Dutch material painters. Material painting made use of the plastic effects and visual power that materials can have. This often resulted in works of art in which, in addition to pasty and expressively applied paint, other materials (sand, metal, wood, etc.) are also processed. The material of which the artwork consists is considered as form as well as content, source of inspiration and purpose. De Haan moved in circles of the Informal Group and was a member of Liga Nieuw Beelden in the years 1958-1959. He has once been called 'the solitary seeker of the origin.'
