The Dordrecht painter Anthonie Pieter Schotel painted cityscapes and still lifes, but his great love was painting water and ships. It was the Zuiderzee, with its departing fishing boats and the intimate tranquility of the water at falling evening, he was most attracted to. After the construction of the Afsluitdijk, he also worked in Zeeland and Rotterdam. His water views are preferably set up in delicate, gray tones as if softened with filtered light. In 1923, 1924 and 1936 he traveled to France, particularly to Normandy, Brittany and the Riviera, but also to Paris, where colourful cityscapes came about.
