Colnot was one of the leading representatives of the Bergen School. These painters were no longer concerned in depicting landscape as it was, but in expressing the deepest feelings and moods that seeing nature evoked in them. Colnot preferred painting Dutch polder landscapes but also captured city and village scenes as well as still lifes in powerful browns, greens and golden colours which were applied with a palette knife.
