The Austrian painter Carl Fahringer captured his surroundings in a colourful and impressionistic touch. After his education at the Vienna Academy, he travelled throughout Europe and Indonesia where he painted daily life and streetscapes. He returned at the outbreak of the First World War, fought at the front and recorded the trenches as a war painter. After the war Fahringer resumed traveling, staying in the Netherlands and painting in Delft and Hoorn. Eventually he returned to Vienna, where he could often be found in the Tiergarten Schönbrunn to paint the animals there. At the academy, Fahringer is appointed professor and teaches the painting of animals and landscapes.
