Jacob Dooijewaard was born in Amsterdam. Initially working in this city, he painted cityscapes and figures in an impressionist style reminiscent of Breitner's. From 1903 he lived in Laren, where he focused on the peasant interior. He also traveled extensively to, among other places, Spain, France and America. He traveled to Norway many times with the American painter William Singer, who lived in Laren.
