Jan van Lokhorst came from a well-known Utrecht family of painters. His father was the animal painter Dirk van Lokhorst, his brother Dirk Pieter painted landscapes with cattle, just like his sister Ida. Jan was the only one who produced summery city and village views in addition to landscapes. He also painted a single ice scene. Jan van Lokhorst lived and worked in Utrecht until about 1872, after which he moved to Brussels. From there he must have returned every now and then to paint cityscapes and landscapes in the surroundings of the ‘Dom'city.
