Job Hansen is one of the most fascinating painters of De Ploeg. As an architect he became a member of this Groningen painting society in 1923, and it was fellow member Jan Altink who then encouraged him to paint. As a self-taught artist, Hansen proceeded to develop a highly personal idiom based on an unconventional way of handling paint and support. He preferred to paint on plywood, first giving it a white ground. Onto this he applied diluted paint using both a broad brush as well as his fingertips and palms. For him the white base was a crucial visual element: it represented light and space, out of which his depictions loomed, sometimes barely recognisable. Hansen chiefly painted floral still lifes and landscapes.
