Lucebert was an experimental painter, maker of drawings, poet and one of the leading figures of the CoBrA movement. His work typically shows an immense freedom and spontaneity. He painted what popped up in his mind, without sticking to any fixed motives. In the 1950s he began making his drawings and watercolours from dots, lines and cross-hatchings, over which he painted the – deliberately – clumsy forms of human bodies and fantasy creatures. A tendency for always wanting to experiment, led him into many other fields: he photographed, made ceramics, wrote plays and painted monumental murals.
