A stack of flowers, painted mainly in colors based on earth tones: red, ocher, brown, orange. A cool, dark background with blues and greens and a gray-white vase form a strong contrast, the warm orange-brown background, on the other hand, matches the tone of the bouquet. Toon Kelder probably painted this work at the beginning of his romantic period, in which he exchanged the powerful, full, dark colors and the heavy touch and contour line for soft, subdued hues and a blending of colors and shapes. This work shows the transition from one style to another, with the powerful touch, clear contours and surfaces, and full tones, but also all the warm palette and the fusion of shapes.
