The Romantic painter Wijnand Nuijen from The Hague was a student of A. Schelfhout. In his short life - he was only 26 - he developed a fiercely romantic vision of the representation of the landscape and thus gave a new impulse to Dutch landscape painting. New for that time was his fresh use of color and the lively upholstery of his paintings. Nuijen traveled to France and Germany and mainly painted landscapes, city and water views. He must also have been in Utrecht during one of his voyages through the Netherlands. As far as we now know, the cloister of the Utrecht Domkerk is the subject of three works by Nuijen: the painting from 1832 depicted here, a version in watercolor (1833) and a lithograph (1831). In the painting he has depicted the northern corner of the western arm of the cloister. The Gothic arch on the right has been bricked up, as was the case in the 1830s, and a brick shed has been placed against it. Nuijen has added fantasy elements, such as the buttress on the left. The watercolour version is also in the Simonis & Buunk collection.
