Harrie Kuijten's work from the 1930s onwards is considered part of the Bergen School. His paintings from that era have a great deal in common with the Bergen landscapes and still lifes rendered in darker colours and chunky shapes. Kuijten's eternal fascination with the human form prompted him to paint not only parties and colourful market scenes but most of all beach scenes that allowed him to portray the sunny side of life. These beach works garnered the painter widespread recognition. The majority are rather small in size and all feature rapid, deft brush strokes: snapshots of beach life on the Dutch coast. The way he paints the sky and motion of the sea with swelling waves and colourful bathers in the surf is brilliant.
