Salomon Verveer lived and worked in The Hague and was, as a valued member of Pulchri Studio, one of the central figures of The Hague's artistic life. His oeuvre includes around 1840 mainly watery city and village views, which in their romantic atmosphere and bright colorite show influence of his young deceased friend W.J.J. Nuijen. Then he painted with a more natural light and without romantic motifs like ruins and reflecting rivers. His paintings were particularly popular among contemporaries, especially because of the lively staffage. That is why he also regularly decorated the city or seascapes of his Hague and Amsterdam painter friends. His most important pupil was Jan Weissenbruch.
