The nude is a favorite subject of Toon Kelder. He probably made this painting in the transition from his expressive to his more romantic period. The colors and their block division still look powerful and earthy, but the atmosphere already tends to the dreamy-sensual that characterizes his later style. In the 1920s he devoted himself to painting flowers and figures in expressive colors and nudes for which his wife usually posed. In the 1930s to about 1945, his dreamy ideal images were created: subtly stylized female figures painted in soft, hazy tones, but also horsemen and mythical figures in forest landscapes.
