Dirk Filarski, along with Arnout Colnot, is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the Bergen School. He mainly painted landscapes, which he made during his many travels around Europe and North Africa. In the Netherlands he was especially captivated by the landscape around Bergen and Giethoorn. At first Filarski used light colours but after 1910 his palette changed into browns and greens and his work became more powerful and expressionist. He also painted still lifes and flowers, broadly rendered in grey tones and brightly contrasting colours.
