Hessel de Boer is a Hague painter in the truest sense of the word: he mainly painted Hague cityscapes. However, he was not concerned with a topographically recognizable spot, but with the representation of the light, for which he used a fine stippling technique. His sunlit cityscapes are known in a small circle, but can compete with the work of pointillists such as Jacob Nieweg, Co Breman and Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig. Hessel de Boer was also a well-known portrait and figure painter. He was a member of the 'Haagse Kunstkring' and 'Pulchri Studio' and showed his work in the Singer Museum in Laren.
